We tend to look for change following reflection of our year past. Perhaps we are not happy with certain things, maybe our weight is the issue, or the way we look or feel about ourselves, or perhaps it is to do with our bank accounts and lack of funds. Usually something we want but have not got.
“I will lose 10 or 20 pounds in weight”, “I will stop eating bread and sugar”, “I will go to the gym 5 times a week” or “I will drink less each week” etc. etc. etc. These are the types of new year’s resolutions I used to make to myself, I used to look to change each January year after year and by March, these intentions would typically falter.
This happened slowly but surely, until I had justified the failure somehow in my mind that at least I tried but “I will start again tomorrow or next week”, until it had faded completely then it was back to the same old same old.
Today, I don’t look for change - I look for progress. Change is constant. Change happens no matter what. The body changes as we grow older, the weather changes each day, relationships change, circumstances change, the economy changes. Although change throughout life is automatic, it is also hard for us as humans to achieve. We push ourselves, and when we don’t see immediate results, we give up. Progress is different. Progress is the gradual improvement or completion of something. Progress takes time.
The majority of new year’s resolutions are “I am going to cut down on sugar” or “I will stop smoking” or “I am going to lose 10 pounds in the next 3 months”. While all are great and positive resolutions, the problem is these types of resolutions are simple, not very inspiring, and hard to achieve. There is no great vision, no big picture, and it’s difficult to imagine and move forward with. To achieve these kinds of goals, you have to constantly push and push yourself, which is where it falls apart. Constantly pushing yourself requires a lot of will power and it will not last because it takes a lot of energy and effort to sustain. However, the pull of something that excites you, that’s attractive, that stimulates your imagination and inspires you is different, and it will last. It will get you fired up and out of bed on a morning, your energy will be ignited and it will pull you towards progression – and then change. Want to lose weight? Great. But it cannot begin and end with that statement. You must understand the if's, what's, where's, when's and why's. You must envision the after, and this will pull you to work towards it every day.
I take my health and wellbeing very seriously. Believe me, this is not something that happened overnight. It has taken years of progress to develop from a vision and a contract I made with myself when I was in very deep pain about my weight, health and life. I was very overweight, and my health was starting to fail in certain areas, my self-esteem was very low, and I was feeling very self-conscious and unpleasant about myself and my lifestyle. I’m sure most people can agree to some degree – and also agree that these feelings tend to be the basis of your new year’s resolutions.
I made a firm decision I would do something about it and today, almost 6 years later, I have lost 60 pounds in weight (over 4 stone), I have gained 42 pounds of lean muscle, I work every day to improve my mental wellbeing and my outlook on life, and I am now a qualified nutritionist undertaking advanced study and research into nutrition and the body, I learn more and more every single day about nutrition and it is astounding how much we as a society do not know.
This active, positive lifestyle however takes constant maintenance. It was born out of a fully-fledged vision that would uproot all corners of my life. It didn’t just happen like magic; it’s taken 6 years of continuous progress with many challenges and ups and downs along the way.
Achieving lasting change requires a strategic approach to New Year's resolutions. Through my personal and educational experience, I have crafted these steps to help ensure your resolutions are not just fleeting goals but enduring transformations. Tried and tested, these can help you to envision-your-vision:
Step 1: Craft a Compelling Vision
To embark on your journey of lasting change, start with a vivid and authentic vision of the person you aspire to become. Don’t think small. This vision should be driven by your true desires, not societal expectations, or external pressures. There could be multiple things you are unhappy with and wish to change – include them all however big or small. For a vision to be compelling, it must be backed up with strong enough reasons so that it will pull you through when the going gets tough or when the distractions become tempting to you.
Step 2: Identify the Reasons Behind Your Vision
Delve into the reasons behind your vision. Understand the costs, fears, and motivations associated with your goals. How did you get to this point? Why is it causing you pain? By articulating why you want to achieve a certain outcome, you create a foundation that will pull you back on track when faced with obstacles or distractions.
Step 3: Daily Review and Conscious Focus
Integrate your vision into your daily routine. Review it consistently, be conscious about it, be obsessed about it. Visualization, feelings, and attraction play a crucial role here. Write down your goals, make daily plans, and incorporate them into your schedule. Remember small steps are progress. This daily engagement reinforces your commitment and transforms your vision into a habit.
Step 4: Change Your Standards
Evaluate your existing standards and question how they've shaped your current situation. Many people adhere to standards set years ago that may no longer serve them. Identify areas of your life where you feel limited or unsatisfied and inquire into the origins of issues like weight gain, health concerns, addiction, or financial struggles. This can be difficult as you can be faced with issues you may have been ignorant to for years. I certainly was.
By understanding and challenging these standards, you can redefine your identity and set new, empowering standards aligned with your vision. This process opens the door to sustainable change by addressing the root causes of your current circumstances.

The majority of the human microbiome is found in the gastrointestinal tract, particularly in the colon, where trillions of microbes thrive. However, the microbiome also exists on the skin, in the mouth, and other parts of the body.
When your microbiome is unbalanced, it is referred to as dysbiosis. Dysbiosis occurs when there is an alteration in the composition and diversity of the microbial community in your gut. This imbalance can have several negative effects on your health and well-being, such as:
Factors that can contribute to an unbalanced microbiome include a poor diet high in processed foods and sugar, chronic stress, lack of physical activity, frequent use of antibiotics, and certain medical conditions.
If you suspect you have an imbalanced microbiome or are experiencing persistent digestive issues or other health problems and are interested in a consultation with a qualified nutritionist, you can find more information here.
At Good Living Nutrition we have a unique programme to assist clients in rebalancing their Microbiome; The Microbiome 21-Day Purify Kit by Synergy. Additionally, If you are looking for 1 to 1 support with a qualified nutritionist to help guide you through the process of your 21 day programme, click here.
Rebalancing your Microbiome can be beneficial for several reasons:
Consulting with a qualified nutritionist can be helpful in designing an approach that is tailored to your specific needs and goals. Introducing dietary changes, incorporating probiotics and prebiotics, and managing stress are some strategies that may be considered in the process of restarting your microbiome, as well as using our 21 Day Purify Kit by Synergy.
]]>You may be shocked to learn that 62% of adults in UK are classed as overweight, 25% are obese leaving only 13% slim and classed as normal weight. Check out these frightening NHS and UK Government statistics:
As the obesity epidemic continues to grow year on year, people becoming increasing fearful of illness and with body image at rock bottom, many people turn to calorie restricted diets in their attempt to lose weight. This is made worse by constant media exposure of slim beautiful models, handsome athletic men modelling the “dos and don’ts” to populations for profit with no real interest in people’s health and wellbeing or what psychological effect its having on people.
It is estimated the weight loss industry will be worth $246 billion by 2022, the weight loss industry is big business worldwide and its expected to continue to grow year on year. There are many different types of diet programmes and many start off cheaply to draw people on to the programme only to become expensive over time without much long-term success.
In fact, research indicates a 95% failure rate, meaning only 5% of people lose weight and keep the weight off long term. So not only is fad dieting expensive, it has a 95% failure rate. It's no wonder people, including my old self, feel like complete failures (famished failures) being no leaner or lighter than at the start and in most cases heavier.
In one study, after 3 years it was concluded that only 12% of participants kept off 75% of the weight they had lost whilst 40% had gained more weight than they lost originally. Another study found that 5 years after a group of women lost weight during a 6-month weight loss program, they weighed 7.9 pounds (3.6 kg) more than their starting weight and it appears that weight regain occurs regardless of the type of diet used for weight loss, although some diets are linked to less regain than others short term.
Here are 3 scientifically proven reasons why fad diets do not work
Let us start by getting the myth out of the way first, many fad diets are popular because they work - for the first few weeks or months. People if they stick to the advertised programme lose 10-15 pounds or more quickly but that is it. The fad diet may be dropping weight off your body however it may not be fat, the weight loss can be water retention or lean muscle (which weighs more than fat). The reason is because most fad diet are based around food deprivation. Many fad diets also induce too fast weight loss rather than a slow controlled weight loss. The problem with fad diets is they offer you significant weight loss but rarely with a balanced and complete intake of all the correct fats, minerals, nutrients, and fibre.
Restricting ourselves of the right food intake will not provide long term good health, it will starve the body of what it needs to function optimally creating potential long-term health problems and so, setting the dieter up for failure because it cannot be maintained.
Fad diets are typically characterised with the words “no” or “none” or “can’t” or “no cheating” or “avoid”. This is all part of the psychology, such words are negative words associated with failure and they are based around strict diet and/or shake regimes that typically leave us feeling depleted with low energy and having to miss out of fun things where food is concerned which is difficult given we need food daily to survive and food play an integral part of our culture and family life.
Picture this, you are invited to a friend’s birthday, you start to salivate over a table filled with delicious food, you think great but, no here it comes, the dreaded word, “I can’t”. I cannot have any because I am on a diet, a little time passes and the urges get stronger, the temptation gets stronger but of course in front of your friends you have to save face, the guilt sets in and later when you get home shame occurs by giving into temptation and your back to square one.
Many fad diets are set around failure to keep you hooked in and of course to take your money off you and the cycle continues or you switch to a different fad diet.
Most fad diets limit the times and way that you can eat, and they keep you in a strict routine. If the only way you can lose weight is by body manipulative and military precision eating habits, then it is very unlikely it can be kept up medium to long term. In fact, they can become highly dangerous to health because key nutrients, minerals, and vitamins together with fibre and healthy fats are left out of daily eating and drinking leading to dehydration, weakness, tiredness, headaches, sleep problems and disease.
What is the Best Way to Lose Weight?
Start by removing the word diet from your vocabulary. It is a lifestyle change that is required not a “quick fix” diet. Look at a nutrition plan, or reward meal or days off or 80/20 rule. Write down written goals of achievement over a specified achievable period, then get into action.
Eat nutrient-dense foods from every food that are right for your body. You do not need to eliminate everything from day one, give yourself room to achieve, have an occasional treat, however, make sure the nutritious high-quality foods take priority
Eating should be pleasurable—not controlled and boring, you can indulge with the right food types, be conscientious and on your game, for you and you only.
Do not get discouraged. It takes time to develop habits, slow down and give yourself enough time to develop a routine that will really change you for the long-term. Set the goals, focus on the quality of your food, not the quantity and in no time, healthy foods will become a way of life!
Get some help from a qualified Nutritionist who will help you with all the above, who may help you with ailments or assist you getting started. Getting proper help for long term personal health benefits should be considered an investment into your personal health and wellbeing for the future. Helping you set personal goals, create meal plans, over come mind set issues and get you on the road.
We at Good Living Nutrition have a unique programme called the ASPIRE Program in which we assist people not with dieting but with real lifestyle change through education around food and drink and assisting people get onto a real lifestyle change for long term, for life, so you can help not only yourself, others too like family friends, partners etc. It is an investment for health wealth.
Your Health is Your Wealth

Many people know no difference, living in todays the fast paced modern society, stress and anxiety is the norm and increasing year on year, many people not getting enough sleep, the demands of work, study and family life taking it’s toll, eating quick foods on the go or packaged oven ready processed high fat, high salt and sugar content foods designed to feed the taste buds and the wrong types of food and drink for the body. In addition to a lack of exercise coupled with a disconnection from our environment many people are feeling lost and dejected.
It is no wonder our society is becoming more and more run down, ill and disease ridden which then involves visits to the doctor with a pill for any ill becoming the norm nowadays. In addition, we must contend on a daily basis with the increase in pollution issues on the road, in the workplace, around the house, in and on our foods with the common use of various additives and chemicals including insecticides, food colouring and sweeteners etc. All these factors are having a detrimental impact on the mind, body, and our health in general. Have you ever wondered why the doctors and hospital are bursting with an endless supply of customers, think about it for a moment?
You may not have heard of the human microbiome; we all have our very own human microbiome; it is what makes us human. In fact, we are made up of an estimated 100 trillion microbes that live on and in us working 24/7 to keep us healthy and alive. It is our very own ecosystem that lives on and in us and much of it lives in our gut and it is called the gut microbiome. The Gut microbiome weighs more than most people’s head and its housed within the long tube called digestive system or the alimentary tract which stretches from the mouth to the anus and everything we eat, or drink passes through this. The problem is that the lifestyle mentioned above can upset our ecosystem or gut microbiome, so it becomes unbalanced and health issues can start to occur.
The gut microbiome main functions include regulation and development of the immune and nervous systems, promotion and regulation of the fat storage, fermentation and digestion of all foods which includes the manufacture of some vitamins and their transportation along with minerals and nutrients to where needed in the body. The gut microbiome affects all aspects of our health including heart and other organs, digestion, the brain, the skin, hormone production, weight storage and nutrient absorption. The gut microbiome plays a vital role in all aspects of our health and wellbeing both good and bad. When its balanced and in state of equilibrium all is well however when it becomes out of balance and disjoined not working in unison a situation called dysbiosis evolves.
What is Dysbiosis
Dysbiosis occurs when microbes in our gut which includes our stomach and intestine tracts become unbalanced. Our body is full of colonies of microbiota of various and different species that work in unison, all playing their roles and performing tasks keeping our human ecosystem balanced, their functions and roles keep us alive, healthy and in wellbeing. The good microbiota keeping the bad in their place or eliminating pathogens that get into our body (a pathogen is any bacteria or virus or microbe that’s sole purpose is disease or cause harm to us). Dysbiosis occurs when the items mentioned in the first paragraph start to send our ecosystem or microbiome out of whack and when this occurs, we start in the early stages to experience mild symptoms which if left can evolve into more serious disease. This may trigger unwell feelings and a cycle of visits to the doctors and/or hospital for tests to find the what is causing the illness. Medications such antibiotics or some other medication are prescribed which in turn may exasperate illness by some side of effects of medication, disease may get worse or changes direction, mutates into another illness and so the cycle continues for the sufferer. I understand this because I have personal experience of this happening to me.
What are the tell-tale signs that your microbiome is out of whack?
Here are a few tell-tale signs that your microbiome is out of whack:
One of the first tell take signs that your ecosystem is out of sync is the following:
You may feel bloated or suffering with gas either burping and/or trumping excessively
Maybe suffering regularly from heartburn or acid reflux or indigestion.
Bouts of diarrhoea and/or constipation may become prevalent or the onset IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) commences leading to more serious issues such as Irritable Bowel Disease including Crohn’s and or Ulcerative Colitis.
These issues are commonly the first tell-tale signs. Many people will take off the shelf medications or visit the doctor where medications can help at surface level to assist however, in may circumstances they do not treat the root cause of the problem – an out of balance gut microbiome.
One of the gut microbiomes functions is the regulation and moderation of our nervous system and research and studies have proved gut is in direct link with the brain, in fact the majority of hormones such as Serotonin, Dopamine, Gaba as well and other are produced in the gut and transported to the brain so if the gut becomes unbalanced then disturbances in hormone production can impact on the brains neurotransmitters possibly causing mental health issues such as:
Brain fog or fussy thinking
Anxiety
Stress
OCD/ADHD
Depression
These can have a serious impact on a person’s life affecting the ability to function adequately in work, in relationships, meeting new friends or opportunities, the affect can be very unpleasant and debilitating for the sufferer. Again, frequent visits to the doctor occur and medication is prescribed which helps at the surface level assisting the brain chemically, however often with the result of some serious side effects and never getting to the root cause of the problem. This can be devastating for the sufferer’s life.
When our Microbiome becomes out of balance, the skin can be affected because the correct nutrients are not feeding the skin or because the body needs to expel toxins and does so through the skin causing various skin complaints such as:
Acne
Eczema
Psoriasis
Rosacea
As mentioned above, the sufferer uses off the shelf medications or visits the doctor for medication which may help with the issues but often its only suppresses the root cause of the problem, an out of balance microbiome and reappears elsewhere.
A vital function of our gut microbiome is the development and regulation of the immune system together with the healthy production of some vitamins through synthesis, the extraction of vital minerals and micronutrients from our foods to be transported to where required around the body. If your microbiome becomes of unbalanced an affect can be that not enough vitamins and minerals are produced for vital bodily functions and the immune system may become compromised. The following issues can become evident:
Fatigue, tiredness, or energy fluctuations
Brittle nails or hair quality diminishes, dandruff or itchy scalp
Prolonged or recurrent or severe common colds, bronchial, respiratory or sinus infections
Regular headaches
Muscle cramps, pains in joins or unexplained pains around the body
Rheumatoid arthritis
Bleeding gums, mouth ulcers or bad breath
These are just a few symptoms, a weakened immune system can be profoundly serious issue, research shows that around 70% of human immunity is produced from the gut so an out of balance gut microbiome can have serious consequences to overall health.
A vital function of our gut microbiome is the regulation of our fat stores around the body, it keeps the fat stores in check ensuring we put on and lose weight naturally, however an out of balance gut microbiome can have serious issues with weight leading to and becoming over weight or worse obese which can progress to very serious diseases. Certain bad bacteria can flourish knocking out the good bacteria leading to development and potential progression to serious disease such as:
Sugar and certain carbohydrate addictions
Candida infections
Serious weight gain and obesity
Diabetes
Various cancer types
Brain disease
Heart disease
Liver disease
The above is not exhaustive, other complaints or issues can be included. You may already be suffering some of these in a mild form and again they can be treated by medication at the surface level so it’s very important you visit your doctor straight away in order to get a diagnosis. Treatment can alleviate the specific disease however additional complications can arise. If symptoms are left, they can get worse and lead to more serious life-threatening issues or even death, so it is particularly important help is sought in order to manage the illness but the sufferer should be mindful of deeper microbial issues at the root cause.
I write this article to educate you, to get you thinking about your own lifestyle right now and if you recognise any of the symptoms mention or you are suffering its important you seek help straight away from a doctor or you can reach out to me too. You may already have visited the doctor or hospital or are already taking prescribed medications to assist you. This is great however often side effects can occur from the medication and or the original problem is exasperated and not cured so you start to live with the problem suffering in silence or moaning to family and friends and/or frequent visits to the doctor and hospital. Your quality of life may diminish, and you lose self-esteem and enthusiasm for life. You may be sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, if this is the case then an alternative way may be the way for you to look at something simple along with continuation with meds, your lifestyle, what you eat and drink, how you are living and how to change this.
Lifestyle Adjustments or Complete Lifestyle Change
The good news is that our microbiome can be reset or rebalanced. The bad news is that this is very much dependant on how poor your gut health is, how long you have been in dysbiosis or suffering with a disease as a result. Everybody is different, we all have own unique life and lifestyle that we have been living. The point is that no matter how far down the scale you are, you can start to make the necessary changes to get your balance, health, and wellbeing back however you must be realistic, this may take time to achieve.
Normally, a total review where you are right now is required. This can be difficult to achieve alone because we become blind or in denial with our lifestyle, we habitually pursue daily without often no thought. This is common because it is how we have been educated from birth (sometimes before birth) from our family, then school, the TV, from books, our friends, or spouses etc. The problem is our existing lifestyle is clearly not serving us correctly hence the reason for the dysbiosis in the first place and the resultant diseases we find ourselves living with.
Once a thorough review is complete, identification of the necessary changes is required. This may be as simple as a few minor lifestyle tweaks through to a radical lifestyle change, which is very much dependent upon the findings of the initial full review.
Implementation of identified changes will require action, often a lot of action. Being realistic it is not easy to change life habits that you habitually perform for 5, 10 or 30 years or more. These habits may no longer serve you; your health and such learnt behaviour can be difficult to change. However and its not as daunting as it may seem with some help from someone who know what they are doing?
Maybe you have been trying to change already entering fad diets on and off, here and there, maybe with exercise routines and only to fail after short or medium space of time. This can be disheartening because the enthusiasm is there at the beginning however often the diet fails to provide what the body needs and so the body reacts, the mind wains and you fall off the wagon. I know this because I have done it numerous times and it can be very disheartening.
It is a fact that studies show fad dieting (there are many different types available) medium to long term do not work for various reasons which I will not go into here. So, an action plan is required, a road map for lifestyle change and success or a set of written goals with a definite purpose with a start date and specific goal dates which will be reviewed regularly along the way. This maybe daily, weekly or monthly or a mixture, it’s all dependant on the results of the review, the necessary changes identified and the person wanting change.
At the very least a minimum of 30 days to 90 days is usually necessary because it takes time, persistence, and discipline to move into new habits and move away and eradicate old (the ones causing the problem) habits. There is usually bumps in the road that sometime may take us off track however if persistence is maintained new habit is become the normal and old ill serving habits will disappear never to return once educated and healing and wellness returns.
Getting Help
By now hopefully you will have got the message there is no doubt at all that change is required in order to get the gut microbiome back into balance and it all starts with what we are eating and drinking and of course our mind set. In addition, an in-depth honest look at the existing lifestyle is required, as mentioned above.
The number one starting point is to speak to your doctor and get help from a fully qualified and fully accredited Nutritionist who will educate you, get you started and work with you. A gut microbiome rebalance is not an overnight job as mentioned above so getting help from someone who knows what they are doing will help speed up the process substantially.
At Good Living Nutrition we have designed a unique programme called the ASPIRE Programme. Through consultation and coaching we work with our clients to identify the problem(s), the existing lifestyle issues, work with you to ascertain the root cause(s) and educate the client about challenges. The client is educated and working together written goals are formulated including a road map that will take the client towards success with an action plan.
There are a few life hacks that can be installed to get the client moving towards success much quicker, although this is dependent upon the severity of the dysbiosis ascertained.
Several ways are available to the nutritionist to assist and one of these is the 21-day Microbiome purify kit and programme. Both my wife and I personally undertake this problem twice per year to assist in keeping our gut microbiome in tip top condition because we understand how important the gut is to our health and wellbeing, why would you not want to feel great most of the time, I believe its our God given right however we are each personably responsible to ourselves. As the late great Jim Rohn said, “look after your body it’s the only place you have to live” and Hippocrates was onto something too when thousands of years ago he quoted “all disease begins in the gut”, wow if only he had the technology society has today because he was right on the button.
To give you some background, the Purify programme combines healthy eating combined with high quality plant based nutritional supplements designed remove toxins and bad microbes, lay down the fertilizer with the right nutrients to support your microbiome and gut health with the introduction back into the gut bacteria growth. ]]>There are many differing viewpoints as to which foods form a balanced diet. One thing is clear however the health and wellness experts agree that minimising process foods, meat and dairy foods and adopting a whole food, plant-based diet has many health benefits
The benefits include overall health superior wellness and is an effective weight loss stimulator.
What Is a Whole-Foods, Plant-Based Diet?
There is no clear definition of a what constitutes a whole food, plant-based diet (WFPB diet). The WFPB diet is not a diet, it is more of a lifestyle.
This is because plant-based diets can vary depending on the extent a person includes animal products in their diet as part of the WFPB
The principle of a whole-foods, plant-based diet is as follows:
Often the WFPB lifestyle is confused with vegan or vegetarian diets. Although they are similar, they are not the same
People who follow vegan diets abstain from consuming any animal products, including dairy, meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and honey. Vegetarians exclude all meat and poultry from their diets, but some vegetarians eat eggs, seafood, or dairy.
The WFPB lifestyle is more actually more flexible where the person eats mostly plants, but some animal products are not off limits for example they may consume the occasional wild meat, fish, eggs or even some seafood
Can a WFPB lifestyle help with weight loss and improve health
According to the NHS 2016 Statistics 29% of the UK population are classed as obese which means they have a body mass index of 30% or more, this is an increase of 92% in ten years. These shocking statistics are attributed to a classic western lifestyle incorporating meat, dairy, process foods and drinks which include refined sugar, salts, and other refined ingredients.
Unfortunately, such diets facilitate weight gain and can have a lasting impact on health over time
On the other hand, there are many studies to evidence that the whole food plant-based lifestyle (WFPB are beneficial for weight loss and health in general.
The high fibre content of the WFPB lifestyle along with the exclusion of processed foods such as refined bread, pastas, and sugar etc is a great combination for stimulating weight loss and improving overall health.
Studies prove that people changed to a WFPB lifestyle lost significantly more weight with the lifestyle change than dieting providing for the weight loss to be maintained over longer period.
Adopting a WFPB lifestyle not only benefits your weight and appearance, it also lowers your risk and reduces symptoms of certain chronic diseases. Although all people benefit by adopting to a WFPB lifestyle certainly people with existing illness such as:
Adopting a whole food, plant-based lifestyle is good for the environment and the planet
Switching to a plant-based diet not only benefits your health — it can help protect the environment, as well. People who follow plant-based diets tend to have smaller environmental footprints.
Adopting sustainable eating habits can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and land used for factory farming, which are all factors in global warming and environmental degradation, furthermore, reducing the number of animal products in your diet and purchasing local, sustainable produce assists the local economy and reduces reliance on factory farming, which many believe to be an unsustainable method of food production.
Do you find a lifestyle change to whole food plant-based diet attractive?
If this type of lifestyle looks attractive to you and you would like further information you can contact the writer, Anthony Jackson who is a qualified living food and alkaline food nutritionist who not only lives by the WFPB lifestyle, he also supports clients trapped in the conventional UK lifestyle of consumption of meat, dairy, processed foods and drinks with some plant based foods to change their lifestyle to the WFPB lifestyle so they can lose weight and be healthier.

There is so much confusion, mainly generated by the media and food manufacturing industry surrounding the healthy diet. One thing for sure is that healthy eating is different from dieting which many people get confused with. Healthy eating focuses on health, wellbeing, vitality, and energy in which weight loss if you are overweight, would be a natural side effect. Eating healthy is about:
Changing an existing mindset, habits and eating regime to a more positive lifestyle can be overwhelming. This is the reason many people yo yo diet and try different weight loss programmes and supplements, there are many on the market and studies have shown that in general they do not work long term. An excellent way to get a lifestyle change underway for the long haul rather than short term bursts is to consult a professional nutritionist to help ensure you get the correct information to take reasoned decisions and provide a clear positive plan with you for the lifestyle change you desire.
What does a Nutritionist do?
A qualified nutritionist is an expert in the field of nutrition, food, and wellbeing through diet. Do nutritionists work with clients online or in person?
Many nutritionist professionals can offer support either by telephone, online via Zoom or Skype or similar platform or in person at the client’s home or nutritionists office.
Can I trust a nutritionist?
It is important to ensure that the nutritionist is trained, qualified and has the experience to assist the client. This can be identified by the nutritionist’s qualification and membership to appropriate professional bodies such as “The Federation of Therapists, Nutritionists and Practitioners” or Complementary Medical Association” or similar.

]]>Concerned about Covid-19
We are in unprecented and worrying times with the UK lockdown into its 4th week and the death toll in excess of 10,000 and 10’s of thousands contracting the disease, these are the ones we actually know about.
My heart goes out to the relatives of people who have died of this terrible disease and those who are struggling both physically with illness and those struggling mentally at home without the illness. Then there are those people who have lost their jobs and business etc. Jobs can be regained; financial worries can be overcome but we cannot replace loved ones who are sadly losing their lives to the illness.
Studies have shown that around 90% of people who are dying or experience chronic illness are doing so because they already have underlying conditions such as:
In addition, a large percentage of these are people over the age of 65.
What of the other 10% of reported people dying that appear to have no underlying medical conditions or fall below the age range mentioned? Recent research undertaken at the Australian Peter Doherty Institute suggests it is down to how robust each individuals immune system is to fight the disease, hence the reason why some people only experience mild symptoms, some worse and a percentage sadly unable to fight off the disease whilst showing no other underlying health conditions.
It seems to be established, therefore that the people dying and/or experiencing chronic illness through Covid-19 either have an already compromised immune system, they are suffering illness already, or unknown to them they have developed a weak or weakened immune system.
So, if we have strong and robust immune system, we have a much better chance to defend ourselves against Covid-19 or any bacterial, virus or other infection.
What is the immune system and what can you do about strengthen it?
I want to start by informing you that I am no scientist or doctor, nothing I am saying is intended to heal, cure, treat any disease so please understand I am simply offering nutritional advice and information to help you in some practical way.
Basically, the immune system is a complex system of cells and proteins that defends the body against any disease or infection. The main function of the immune system is to protect your body from harmful viruses and bacteria, 70 to 80% of the immune system is located in the gut, intestinal tract or if you like within our microbiome with the remainder located in other parts of the body such as the spleen or in bone marrow.
Our gut is where most of our antibodies or immunoglobulin is created and used by the body to neutralize pathogen viruses and bacteria attacking the body. Bearing this in mind, our gut or our Microbiome is then the first line in the defence against any illness.
Look after your Microbiome and it will look after you.
What is the Microbiome?
The gut microbiome is made up of trillions of cells, viruses, protozoa, bacteria, fungi and microbes that reside in the gut and play a very important role in your health by assisting with digestion control, regulate our immune system and protect us against disease. It helps to produce and transport vitamins and prevent infections, inflammatory disorders, mental health issues and help provide longevity. The average microbiome houses 10’s of trillions of microbes within the gut and can weigh up to 2kg. Looking at our microbiome, it in fact makes up to 90% of our body if we also include water content.
It is very important therefore that our microbiome is fed the right kinds of food and drinks for it to remain healthy so it can work for us and for our bodies.
It is very simple to keep it working for us, keeping us healthy, just feed it what it is designed and has evolved to eat – lots of fibre and where do you get fibre from, plants.
The microbiome can become out of balance due to several factors:
How does it work?
Given that our immune system is our first line of defence and 70-80% of the immune system is in the gut made by our microbiome then how do we ensure a healthy microbiome?
The problem with todays standard British diet is too much acidic and processed food and drink is consumed. These foods are pro-inflammatory and cause acidity in the body thereby promoting cytokines and pathogens. The inflammation and acidity lower the immune system and knocks out the good bacteria allowing bad bacteria to over colonise which in turns sends the microbiome out of balance with the effect that the immune system becomes preoccupied in dealing with the inflammation.
A little inflammation is good in order to keep the immune system active and on guard however what the body does not want, is over consumption of foods and drinks that trigger too much inflammation and acidity. If this continues over time it may trigger the onset of disease like obesity, diabetes, strokes, cancer, arthritis, heart disease or milder issues such as IBS, depression, sleep issues, skin and hair problems to name a few.
Acidic foods include meat of all types, dairy produce of all types, most processed foods, fizzy drinks, alcohol and some fruits, grains and oils.
When we are pounding our immune defence system or microbiome with poor diet, stress, toxins etc then we are over time diminishing our bodies defences to flight disease on our behalf, hence the reason many people are living in chronic states of inflammation and weak immune defences.
What calms and reduces inflammation, what promotes a healthy microbiome and immune system:
Whole food plant-based diets especially alkaline foods are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-virus. Plants contain antioxidants, polyphenols, they are packed with nutrients, vitamins and minerals, chlorophyll, omega nutrients and lots of fibre. Many plants are also pre and probiotic too.
Plants and plant fibre feed the microbiome and allow it to flourish. When this occurs, your immune system will strengthen with ability to respond defensively, providing you with the first and best line of defence against all disease.
Most people are born with their microbiome. It is designed specifically for us, we each have our own, it evolved with us together in a win/win situation, feed your microbiome well and it will look after you. It wants to heal you, protect you, help you and all you have to do is feed it correctly, simple. It is designed to help us against bad viruses, bacteria, parasites, inflammation, toxins and to detox. All you must do is feed it what is loves, whole food plants and plant fibre. We get 0% fibre from animal-based products.
What can I do to change my lifestyle/how can I help my Microbiome?
The good news is that no matter where you are now in life, change can occur, our microbiome is a living organism that could start to respond with your next meal and drink. It really is as simple as that, keep feeding your microbiome with correct foods and cut out the wrong foods and it will start to flourish positively. Starting is easy part however continuation is the hard-challenging part, knowing which food and drinks to eat and which to cut out is the challenge.
Our bad bacteria may have over colonized our gut and they are very clever and have worked out how to control us with cravings for different foods such as sugar, starchy and salty carbohydrates. Also, the body will need to go through a detoxification period to rid it of toxins built up over time which can be very difficult to overcome.
Seeking the assistance of someone like myself a qualified nutritionist can guide and coach you through the process, with meal planning encouragement and guidance along with a very clever bio hack I have in partnership with Synergy Worldwide who in their scientific research centre have produced the unique Microbiome 21 day purify programme.
What is the 21-day Microbiome Purify Programme?
The Microbiome Purify programme combines healthy eating with high quality nutritional plant-based products designed to support your microbiome and gut health. The Purify Programme includes:

Healthy meal recipes
One Purify Kit includes 1 Biome Shake, 1 ProArgi-9+, 1 Body Prime, 1 Biome DT and Biome Actives. Combined, these five innovative formulas work in synergy are at the core of the Purify program.
ProArgi-9+ relaxes and widens the arteries, enabling the body to access deeply held toxins in stagnant areas of the body. It also helps remove ammonia and plaque from the lining of arteries. It is achieved because the main active ingredients of L arginine and L citrulline combine to form nitric oxide in the blood.
Biome DT is an innovative dietary drink with zinc, glutamine, psyllium, plant extracts and seeds. It is high in chlorophyll and helps the body to come out of an acidic state into an alkaline state. Bad bacteria, candida, fungi and parasites reduce when the body is alkaline, as they prefer to live in an acidic body. Biome DT also helps your body to remove heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and mercury thus allowing detoxification to occur.
Biome Shake is made from a pea protein and is very filling. Within it is inulin, made from chicory root, which is a pre-biotic. These fermentable fibres create the right environment in the gut for good bacteria to flourish. It is high in fibre and plant protein providing the body exactly what it needs.
Biome Actives contain pre and probiotics, which are the good bacteria to put into your body and populate the gut. The spore called bacillus coagulants is very robust and can survive in your stomach acid and even cooking at high temperatures.
Body Prime is a magnesium capsule with apple pectin and prune powder. Your body is often deficient in magnesium and this helps with energy levels and cardiovascular health. Body Prime is formulated to help lubricate the bowels allowing toxins to move out of the body easily.
The programme is designed to prepare the body in a healthy way for detoxification in order to reduce and remove bad bacteria and microflora from the body. Combined with a plant based whole food diet, the programme products work in synergy to provide prebiotics which is the fertilizer for the probiotics and introduction of new healthy lifestyle over the 21 days which is the amount of time required for form new healthy habits and eliminate or reduce not so healthy habits.
I personally undertake the purify programme biannually in order to keep by microbiome in check and to detoxify my body, it is very beneficial in many ways to enhance health, lifestyle and wellbeing. The benefits from the programme are amazing, it’s safe, chemical free, animal protein free and assist the body to a healthier lifestyle.

]]>Did you know: 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime. Females have the highest lifetime risk of breast, lung and bowel cancers. Males have the highest lifetime risk of prostate, lung and bowel cancers.
Cancer Research UK = 22 Oct 2019
Pretty scary statistics?
It’s a fact that good food and eating healthy not only nourishes the body and lifts the spirits, strong evidence suggest that our choice of diet, physical activity, the environment and stress levels are not only detrimental to our health, they are also strongly linked to the cause of cancer.
I believe that nobody wants cancer and where food and drink is concerned many of us try our best to eat well and healthy. However, I believe there is much confusion around what is good and bad nutrition, what is healthy and what is not, inadequate and misinformation from manufacturers and suppliers surrounding food, drinks and their nutritional ingredients don’t help either. Perhaps some of us have picked up poor eating habits from family members and peers and, of course today’s world is also fast paced leaving us with little time for the preparation of wholesome healthy foods so many of us opt for food on the go from one of the hundreds of food outlets on the high street and retail parks or pre-packaged from supermarkets instead.
In addition, the environment is essential to our health, the air we breath is vital for our body functions to keep us alive and the clean earth that provides us with the fresh foods we eat and the rain water for what we drink, all necessary for good health and wellbeing. However with more vehicles on the roads than ever before, many different chemicals used to manufacture goods and the use of pesticides on crops to deter insects on food produce, GMOs and not to mention the cleaning products we use around the house, office and on our bodies to keep it us clean, What impact may these be having on our health and wellbeing?
Then the demands of modern living to ensure our bills, mortgage or rent is paid, to buy food and enjoy material things put ever more time pressure on us to perform in the workplace leaving little or no time for physical activity and in turn increases our stresses levels seems to be increasing placing pressure on our relationships.
There are quite a few different views on what causes cancer and what is mentioned above is by no means exhaustive, it may still be whelming with the confusion surrounding what to do, what to eat and drink and what not to do in order try to reduce cancer risks personally or for loved ones.
There are lots of steps you can take to make a cancer diagnosis less likely in the future. Cancer is a complex disease – no single factor is likely to be the cause, nor can a single piece of research can give us all the answers. It is clear however from many studies that there are simple things you can do starting right now to reduce your risk to cancer or other disease
Here are a few tips:
